Joy Harjo has been appointed the 23rd U.S. poet laureate. Ms. Harjo is a member of the Muscogee Nation. The 68-year-old says that poetry is healing.
To her, poetry is “soul talk” and she’s been championing poetry for more than forty years. According to the article in The Lily, “To her, poems are ‘carriers of dreams, knowledge and wisdom,’ and through them she tells an American story of tradition and loss, reckoning and mythmaking.”
